That’s what people who know the Iris Berman Early Childhood Center say about the school, its teachers and its director Rachelle Zomick. A warm and inviting place, the school has been educating preschoolers between the ages of 1 and 4 from Livingston, West Orange and beyond, for nearly 25 years.
Reggio Emilia-Inspired Approach
We honor children and respect their capabilities and potential.
As a Reggio-inspired preschool the children discover the world around them through authentic experiences. Our integrated approach ensures that the children move smoothly from their Jewish world, through their daily routines including literacy, science and math explorations, while continuing to bring the outdoor world of life and nature into our indoor space.
A love of Judaism and Israel are at the heart of daily life at the Iris Berman Early Childhood Center. Beginning with circle time in the morning and continuing throughout the day, the children are encouraged to explore and learn about their world.
Hebrew language and the weekly Torah portions come to life in our classrooms on a daily basis. Chessed and Mitzvot, acts of loving kindness and good deeds, are a constant in our routines.
Jewish and American holidays are celebrated at the school and a “trip” to Israel is one of the yearly highlights for students. For weeks before the scheduled “trip,” the youngsters learn about each City they will visit. The children gain so much knowledge about Israel that when a 4-year-old made a trip to the Jewish state with her family, she impressed a local tour guide by telling him what was in cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
While it may sound like it’s all work and no play that’s far from the case. In fact, it’s through play that the youngsters learn and grow.
“What children learn does not follow as an automatic result from what is taught, rather, it is in large part due to the children’s own doing, as a consequence of their activities and our resources.”
—Loris Malaguzzi, The Hundred Languages of Children
Using the Reggio Inspired philosophy allows for creativity and inspiration. Children are natural born explorers and inventors. They are born with the instinctive need to discover. With this in mind the environment is set up to inspire and allow for their curiosity to be open ended.
Children learn best in natural surroundings. The outdoor classroom, our nearby playground, is used on a regular basis for exploration and engagement. We find that being immersed in calming hues of the organic outdoors allows children the greater ability to focus and make connections. We bring the outdoors indoors to foster continued authentic investigation.
Teachers at the Iris Berman ECC focus on the needs of each child individually and ensure that they work in partnership with parents to provide the best possible preschool experience. Our teachers understand how to foster children’s innate curiosity. Our teachers are facilitators who allow children the time needed to build on their experiences. They present the children with an environment that acknowledges individuality while showcasing everyone’s strength in building community.
Ultimately, the aim of the Iris Berman Early Childhood Center is to give youngsters the tools and foundation necessary to succeed not only in a school but in their future lives.
Kindergarten teachers at local schools have praised the learning at the Iris Berman Early Childhood Center noting that the children who come from IBECC have strong math, literacy skills in both Hebrew and English, and are ready to take the next educational leap in kindergarten.
The intimate nature of the school ensures personalized attention for each child. School hours vary by age, and we offer early drop off and extended day care options.
We are proud to offer on-site occupational therapy and speech therapy programs from two well-respected therapy centers.
